Performance & health coaching for the cognitive athlete
visiON & GOALS
Esports as an industry, source of entertainment and performance arena has been growing and evolving at an exponential rate in recent years. But with greater opportunities and visibility also comes more pressure for players, coaches and organizations. While so many colleagues in my field of expertise still brush off esports as ‘just playing video games’ and stick to traditional sports, I see self-proclaimed experts and gurus entering the scene to benefit from this vacuum. To combat this evolution I'm happy to offer my services to players, coaches or organizations who look for an evidence-based approach to performance, health, lifestyle and personal development in esports.
Esports is such an exciting scene to work in for me as a performance and health psychologist. I recognize the top level cognitive performance an esports athlete needs to deliver, while we have to acknowledge the body remains inactive for long hours of training and competing. This is a tricky balance that should not be neglected and a puzzle I look at together with you. Only when looked at from a holistic standpoint, players can reach their optimal potential.
As a sport psychologist/performance coach/mental coach I can help you:

In my esports counselling I combine my experience from working as a performance psychologist in traditional sports and health coaching with evidence based techniques from my education and trainings throughout the years. My profound and sincere interest in your world and sport comes for free.

FAQ
WHat's the difference between a sport psychologist/Performance coach/Mental coach?
The title 'psychologist' and its derivatives are protected by law in Belgium and can therefore not be used by just anyone. Someone who calls themself a sport psychologist should have completed a university education and have at least a master's degree in psychology. In addition, he/she has preferably undertaken further studies in the field of sports psychology on the basis of additional (university level) training.
The term 'coach' is not protected by law. Although there are good educations and training courses on coaching, people without any scientific background can also promote themselves as mental or performance coaches. This often happens based on one's own life or sports experiences. While a mental coach usually focuses on mental skills training, in esports a performance coach usually takes on a holistic role to advise players on all things related to performance, meaning exercise, nutrition, mental, lifestyle, etc. For coaches of all kind it is important to know when a situation exceeds one's training and when they need to refer to a specialist (e.g., strength & conditioning specialists, nutritionists, psychologists, physicians, etc.) for specific screenings, program development or further follow-up.
From my background and education I can call myself a sports psychologist and I regard myself as a mental or performance coach that knows his boundaries. To find out more about my background, you can take a look at the 'About Me' section or the overview of my education and training.

WHat happens with late cancellations or no shows?
If individual clients cannot attend a scheduled session, they can cancel or reschedule it free of charge up to 24 hours in advance. Cancellations must be reported by telephone or e-mail. If a client cancels a scheduled session late (<24h) or does not show up (in person or online), the session will be charged in full.
Cancellations of a lecture or workshop must be communicated at least one week in advance by telephone or e-mail. If not announced in time, I am forced to charge the total amount of the cancelled session as a compensation for the dedicated time.

DO you play videogames yourself?
Am I gamer myself? Yes. Not an esports athlete, but I thoroughly like to enjoy relaxing and exploring story driven action adventure games. And I honestly never really gave up my dream of catching all Pokémon and becoming the very best.
With which game titles have you worked?
At the moment of writing I have worked with CS:GO, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege.
Is your game title not on the list yet? Then I would like to get to know it better! In-depth knowledge of your game of preference is not necessary for a successful collaboration. I may be an expert on the mental aspects, but you remain the expert on yourself and your sport. Through our collaboration we learn to better understand the role of the mental aspects in your sport and I can give specific advice that suits your needs. This being said, I will obviously do my research before our first session.
Besides my experience in esports I have working experience with a lot of traditional sports.

I think I am/My son or Daughter is addicted to gaming
In my work as a sports psychologist or performance coach in esports, I mainly work with gamers who are dealing with overtraining, burnout, fear of failure, etc., or players who want to perform even better in their game. Game addiction is a completely different issue that requires a distinct and appropriate approach. For these requests I like to refer to my colleagues of GameChangers. In addition to gaming addiction counselling, they also offer many tips and advice to young people and parents towards the prevention of gaming addiction or problematic gaming behaviour. While their website is in Dutch, they accept English speaking clients as well.

Testimonials
The teams for which we brought in Cedric as help and facilitator were initially skeptical about the new/innovative way of working with them. In the end, it turned out that the impact Cedric had on both personal well-being and sporting results is undeniably positive. Both for them and the outside world. We would always recommend him for any psychological support for an (e)sports team.
